Kayaking (almost) the Entire Charles River: VIDEO

“Row, row, row your boat. Gently down the stream /

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily. Life is but a dream.”   — Row, Row, Row Your Boat

I’m doing adventures videos now. I hope you like this one. I spent about 800 hours learning how to use iMovie to make it.

In October of 2017, I spent 3 days kayaking the Charles River. I attempted to do it in 1 day, but several factors prevented this, including dehydration (forgot my iodine pills), being wet and cold (cheap trash bags are not waterproof), and repeatedly being startled by beavers swimming up to my kayak only to abruptly dive down and tail-smack the water as a warning to their beaver brethren.

Ok, so I’m scared of beavers and the dark. Fine. I got off the river after 20 miles on Day 1, but I came back a few days later and finished the Charles River like a boss.

At times, I gently and merrily floated down the stream. And after hours upon hours of paddling alone, life actually did take on dreamlike qualities. But at times I was also forced to disembark from my kayak and walk downstream — the water was just too low. And the Charles has about 20 manmade dams along its 77.7 river miles. When you add in all the beaver dams, fallen trees, and riffles (shallow little rapids), I was probably forced out of my kayak 50-100 times during the 3 days.

Enjoy the video. I’ll be posting a written account of the trip soon with some pictures.
